Somatic Experiencing is an experiential, mind-body oriented therapy developed by Dr. Peter Levine that restores the natural rhythms of a nervous system dysregulated by psychological trauma.

When an individual experiences a dangerous or overwhelming event, the body initiates an instinctive survival response: fight, flight, or freeze. If this natural survival response cannot complete, the highly charged survival energy becomes "stuck" or "trapped" within the autonomic nervous system.
Over time, this lingering, unresolved survival energy manifests as chronic mental and physical health symptoms, including:
- Hypervigilance: Living in a constant state of high alert.
- Chronic Pain & Tension: Muscle tightness or systemic fatigue.
- Anxiety & Panic: Sudden shifts in heart rate, blood pressure, and breathing.
- Emotional Numbing: Feeling disconnected from your life or your body.
- Dysregulation: Difficulty managing intense emotional states.
How SE Works: Tracking Interoception and Proprioception
During an SE session, a trauma therapist guides you to safely notice, track, and interpret your internal bodily signals. This process relies on rewiring two crucial somatic pathways:
1. Interoceptive Sensations
Interoception refers to your awareness of sensations inside your body, such as your heartbeat, breathing depth, or muscular contraction. Trauma often hyperactivates these signals, leaving you in constant physical discomfort. SE helps you notice subtle shifts—like a sudden wave of warmth, tingling, or gentle vibrations—which indicate your nervous system is safely discharging its trapped trauma energy.
2. Proprioceptive Sensations
Proprioception is your body’s implicit sense of where its limbs are in physical space. Deep trauma can disrupt this spatial awareness, causing you to feel profoundly fragmented or entirely disconnected from specific parts of your body. Practicing embodied awareness in a safe therapeutic environment slowly restores your connection to yourself, transforming distressing physical sensations into a baseline of deep safety.
Core Techniques Used to Facilitate Somatic Healing
To prevent you from becoming overwhelmed or re-traumatized by intense physical sensations, Somatic Experiencing uses a highly controlled pacing system.
- Pendulation: Your therapist will help you to fluidly shift your awareness back and forth between a challenging sensation and a resource of absolute calm or neutrality (see my article: What is Pendulation?).
- Titration: This process ensures you only experience a tiny "drop" of the traumatic memory or physical charge at a time. This deliberate pacing gives your nervous system the space it needs to process and integrate the experience safely.
Because it is an experiential therapy, SE directly updates the physical biology of your brain and body, making it uniquely effective compared to traditional, top-down talk therapies (see my article: The Benefits of Mind-Body Based Somatic Experiencing).
Somatic Experiencing can act as your standalone treatment plan, or it can be easily integrated alongside other powerful trauma therapy modalities, such as:
- EMDR Therapy (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing)
- AEDP (Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy)
- Clinical Hypnosis (Hypnotherapy)
- IFS Parts Work Therapy (Internal Family Systems Therapy)
Healing Unresolved Trauma Through Experiential Therapy
Freeing yourself from a history of trauma is a collaborative process. If you have been living in a state of chronic nervous system activation, working with an SE trauma specialist can help you safely discharge the old survival energy holding you back.
Choosing the right modality—or a custom combination of modalities—is the first step toward reclaiming your body and living a deeply fulfilling life.
