Moving Beyond the Surface in Psychotherapy: Why I Treat the Root Causes of Distress and Not Just the Symptoms

When people first walk through the door of my Greenwich Village psychotherapy private practice, they are often seeking immediate relief from a specific, exhausting symptom. They might be struggling with a relentless cycle of worry, grief, complex trauma, relationship issues, career issues or overwhelming stress.

Healing requires looking beneath symptoms to the root cause.

It is completely natural to want these symptoms to simply vanish. They are uncomfortable, disruptive, and draining.
However, in my over 25 years as an NYC psychotherapist, I have learned that treating a symptom without exploring its origin is like cutting the top off a weed while leaving the root intact—it is only a matter of time before it resurfaces.

Symptoms are not the enemy. In reality, they are a form of communication. They are the clever, adaptive ways your mind and body have learned to protect you from deeper, unresolved pain or unresolved trauma.

Healing With the Mind-Body Connection
When you experience chronic anxiety, a sudden mood drop, or an emotional boundary issue in a relationship, your nervous system is playing a recording of a past survival strategy. At some point in your life, that specific stress response kept you safe. Today, however, that same response might be keeping you stuck.
If we only focus on changing your surface-level thoughts or managing your immediate behavior, we miss the deeper narrative.
True transformation happens when we shift our focus from "What is wrong with me?" to "What happened to me, and where is it still held in my mind and body?"
To achieve lasting healing, my psychotherapy practice incorporates deep, experiential mind-body approaches.
How Experiential Psychotherapy Reaches the Root
To heal the root causes of psychological and relational distress, we must access the parts of the mind and the body where trauma and stress responses are actually stored.
Here is how I use an integrated, experiential approach to help you heal from the inside out:
  • Calming the Stress Response: Through EMDR therapy, we use bilateral stimulation to help your brain to heal stuck traumatic memories.
  • Releasing Trapped Survival Energy: Using Somatic Experiencing, we shift our attention to the physical sensations in your body. This mind-body approach gently releases the fight, flight, or freeze energy that has been locked in your nervous system, resolving chronic physical tension and nervous anxiety.
  • Healing the Wounded Core: Through IFS Parts Work, we look at your symptoms as protective "parts" of your personality. Instead of fighting an anxious or defensive part of yourself, we approach it with curiosity and compassion. This uncovers the wounded core beneath the defense, leading to profound inner harmony.
  • Processing Emotions in Real-Time: Using AEDP therapy, we don't just talk about your history in a detached way. We actively track and process difficult emotional experiences in the safety of our here-and-now therapeutic relationship, allowing for rapid, deep emotional healing.
Healing For a More Fulfilling Life
By resolving the underlying trauma, your current symptoms will eventually lose their power over you. You can step out of old survival patterns and finally experience the deep, meaningful transformation you deserve.

👤 Josephine Ferraro, LCSW - NYC Psychotherapist and Trauma Specialist
I am a licensed New York City psychotherapist and trauma therapist with over 25 years of clinical experience.

I see individual adults and people in relationships in my psychotherapy private practice located at 412 Avenue of the Americas (6th Avenue), Greenwich Village, Manhattan New York, NY 10011.

I offer a complimentary 15 minute phone call before setting up an initial appointment.

My approach is experiential and I have advanced skills in:

• EMDR Therapy: Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing helps the brain reprocess traumatic, stuck memories using bilateral stimulation, reducing the emotional distress and bodily anxiety associated with past events.

• Somatic Experiencing Therapy: A mind-body oriented therapeutic approach that helps release the stress and trauma locked in the nervous system, allowing you to move past chronic states of fight, flight, or freeze.

• IFS Parts Work Therapy: Internal Family Systems helps you explore and heal different internal "parts" of your personality—such as defensive, anxious, or wounded parts—to cultivate self-compassion and inner harmony.

• AEDP Therapy: Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy focuses on processing difficult emotional experiences in real-time alongside a supportive therapist, fostering rapid healing through deep emotional connection.

• Clinical Hypnosis (Hypnotherapy): A therapeutic technique that uses guided relaxation and focused attention to access the subconscious mind, helping to uncover deep-seated patterns and reinforce positive behavioral changes.

In addition, I am an Emotionally Focused Couples Therapist (EFT) and Certified Sex Therapist.
