How to Overcome the Trauma Freeze Response with Somatic Experiencing

This article was updated on October 9, 2026.
Most people are familiar with the "fight or flight" response to danger. However, when a threat is overwhelming or inescapable, the nervous system shifts into its third instinctual survival mechanism: the freeze response.

Somatic Experiencing addresses the deep brain and autonomic nervous system to gently thaw trauma-related dissociation.

In psychology, the freeze response is closely linked to dissociation—a protective mental state where the mind or body numbs out, feels paralyzed, or disconnects from the immediate environment. While freezing preserves safety in a moment of absolute crisis, unresolved trauma can leave your nervous system chronically stuck in this frozen state.
Below is a clinical composite scenario illustrating how the trauma freeze response manifests and how somatic therapy works to resolve it.
The Trauma Freeze Response: A Case Example
The Modern Trigger
Jan was a senior manager who spent months navigating unwanted sexual advances from a corporate leader at her company. She felt immense anxiety and extreme wariness  whenever she walked through the office doors.
One afternoon, the manager cornered Jan alone in the office pantry. In that exact moment, Jan’s nervous system took over. She wanted to run, but she felt physically paralyzed and frozen in place. Her heart raced, her skin turned pale, and she could not speak. This is the physiological freeze response: her body felt the threat was inescapable, mimicking a state of total paralysis to protect itself.
The Historic Root
In therapy sessions following the incident, we uncovered the historical blueprint for this physical freeze. As a young child, Jan had experienced sexual molestation by an uncle. When she tried to tell her mother, she was blamed and told she must have provoked the behavior.
As a child, Jan had no physical power to fight back or flee. Her only biological survival strategy was to freeze and dissociate.
How Somatic Experiencing Heals the Frozen Nervous System
When the adult manager cornered Jan in the pantry, her brain could not distinguish past from present. The current threat instantly triggered her childhood trauma, automatically activating the exact same involuntary physical paralysis.
Through the mind-body framework of Somatic Experiencing, Jan’s therapy focused on three clinical pillars:
  1. Emotional Resourcing: Before addressing the trauma, we developed a baseline of internal safety and confidence. This structural support empowered Jan to report the manager to the company's EEO officer, resulting in his termination after an investigation of Jan's case and other similar complaints from other women in the office.
  2. Uncoupling Past from Present: In SE terms, I helped Jan "uncouple" or separate her childhood feelings of powerlessness from her present adult reality. She learned to notice on a visceral level that she was no longer a helpless child—she was an adult with choices, boundaries, and agency.
  3. Discharging Trapped Survival Energy: By slowly tracking her internal physical sensations, Jan’s autonomic nervous system was able to safely thaw and release the defensive energy that had been trapped in her body since childhood.
Why Somatic Experiencing Succeeds Where Talk Therapy Does Not
Traditional talk therapy can be effective in certain non-trauma related cases, but it operates primarily from the "top-down" (focusing on thoughts and logic). If your nervous system is stuck in a profound physical freeze or a state of chronic dissociation, you cannot think your way out of it.
Somatic Experiencing is an experiential, "bottom-up" therapy. It targets the physical sensations held within the deep brain and autonomic nervous system.
Unlike traditional modalities, SE does not even require a perfectly clear cognitive memory of the trauma to be highly effective. It simply reads the language of the body to restore your nervous system's natural, fluid equilibrium.
